RUTH SCHLOSS

Ruth Schloss was born in 1922 in Germany. She moved to Israel with her family in 1937. She studied at the Bezalel Academy of Art in Jerusalem. There she took classes taught several well-known Israel artists, including Mordecai Ardon.

Schloss worked illustrating children’s books and magazines at the Sifriat Poalim publishing house. In 1949 she travelled to Paris and studied Cubism at the Grande Chaumiere. Two years later she returned to Israel, and her main interest was in social realism.

Social realism went out of fashion and Schloss’s art wasn’t appreciated, mainly because her political views didn’t match those of the art establishment. During the 50’s, her work showed her concern for the human condition and reflected the difficult living conditions of Israel's new immigrants. Even Though she hardly exhibited, Schloss painted and drew every day.

Through the years, Schloss started working with figurative painting. She usually worked with subjects that were weak, oppressed, deprived and discriminated. This included a variety of subjects - from children, the elderly, women, refugees and animals.

Ruth Schloss died in 2013.
