LEA NIKEL
Lea Nikel was born in Ukraine in 1918. In 1920 her family immigrated to British-administered Palestine. In 1935, she began her painting studies with the artist Chaim Gliksberg in Tel Aviv. Later she continued her studies with Yechezkel Streichman and Avigdor Stematsky. She lived in Greenwich Village, Rome and New York, and by the year 1977 she decided to return to Israel.
Lea Nikel had a style that was considered like a form of expressionistic abstraction sometimes known as lyrical abstraction. Nikel was known for her compositions consisting of rough-edged blocks of color and calligraphic lines that together expressed a sense of imaginative excitement.
She carried her first solo exhibition at Chemerinsky Art Gallery in Tel Aviv and her first solo show in Paris at Galerie Colette Allendy in 1957. She also was part of several international group exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale in 1964. The Tel Aviv Museum of Art organized a retrospective exhibition of her paintings in 2005.
Lea Nikel passed away in September of 2005.
