JOSEPH ZARITSKY

Joseph Zaritsky was born in 1891 in Ukraine.  He started his art studies there, at the Academy of Art. In 1923 he moved to Israel and decided to settle in Jerusalem.


Together with the artist Avraham Melinkov, they were the first to initiate the Israeli Artists Exhibition at the Tower of David in Jerusalem. This exhibition continued annually uo to 1928. He was part of the Painters and Sculptors Association, and in 1948 he moved to Tel Aviv and became one of the founders of the "New Horizons" group.

He was awarded in 1955 after his solo exhibition. Through that period, he spent some time in Europe, in cities like Amsterdam and Paris. His works were exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum. Zaritsky was very influenced by this trip, amazed by the two dimensional painting and the illusory and figurative painting. After this, Zaritsky started developing a more abstract compositions in his works.

Joseph Zaritsky died in 1984.
