ITZCHAK TARKAY

Itzchak Tarkay was born in Subotica (Yugoslav-Hungarian border) in 1935. He was deported to the Nazi concentration camp Mauthausen-Gusen in Austria in 1944. Because of the Allied liberation of the camps in 1945, Tarkay to emerge alive, and in 1949 he moved with his family to Israel.

In 1951 he earned a scholarship to the Bezalel Art Academy in Jerusalem. He was forced to leave the school after one year because of his family’s financial difficulties and his obligation to serve in the Israeli army. Once he finished his service, he moved to Tel Aviv and attended to the Avni Institute of Art. From his graduation in 1956, he had several exhibitions in Israel and abroad, notably the International Art Expo in New York City (1986, 1987). We can find his works in public, private, and corporate collections all around the world.

His work is usually described as having “timeless, universal values – values that have staying power and do not simply ride the tide of fashion.” He painted for the need of painting and not to make a political statement. He was influenced mainly by the French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, with artist like Henri Matisse and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. His return to classic styles is what makes his artwork remarkable, strong, and refreshing.

Tarkay passed away on June 3, 2012.
