DAVID SCHNEUER

David Schneuer was born in 1905 in Poland and grew up in Munich. After graduating from school, he decided to move to Paris. There he met many artists that help to define the Expressionist movement. He went back to Munich and worked in the Munchener Schauspiellerhause with figures such as Brecht.

In 1933 he was arrested and imprisoned in Dachau as a cultural revolutionary. When he was released, he settled in Tel Aviv where he kept painting.

His works are known for his lively representation of women and men in nightclubs and bars. His work usually referred to sexuality and erotic subjects, disguised thorough subtle lines and soft colors palette. Schneuer’s work can be compared with other painters like Otto Dix and George Grosz, who also depicted elements of modern life in the city and nightlife. Nevertheless, what set the artist apart was his grey-toned color palette and his dark black outlines, a style that comes from the interest in Japanese printmaking.

Schneuer died in 1988 in Tel Aviv. His works are held in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Tel Aviv Museum, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and the Spertus Museum in Chicago, among others.
